Obituary


Charles A. Soper, 89, of Abington, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully with his loved ones by his side on December 28, 2024 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton.

Born July 29, 1935 in Brockton to Herbert and Muriel (Walker) Soper, he was a graduate of Abington High School where he was captain of the football team. After graduating he proudly served in the United States Air Force for 21 years and was a Vietnam Veteran. He retired in 1974 as a Senior Master Sergeant. Following his service, he became an electrician and was a long-time member of the local I.B.E.W.

Charlie loved to be outdoors as much as possible and stayed very active in his later years fishing, clamming & gardening were some of his favorite activities and he had an amazing green thumb and could grow pretty much anything. He also enjoyed researching his family genealogy and he and his wife Virginia were regular visitors to the Dyer Library in Abington.

For so many years he was known for his daily visits to his preferred coffee shop, Dunkin Donuts on Brockton Avenue in Abington and he made many friends through the years there.

He was preceded in death by all his siblings Marilyn Clark, Herbert Alan, Walter Lewis, Roberta Ann, Jeanne Garfield, Robert William, twins Donald Wayne & David Wallace, George Harmon, and Barbara Sasso, as well as his beloved little dog Sheba who he took such good care of.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 68 years, Virginia Barwick of Sumter, South Carolina, and children Michael Soper & his wife Cathy from Marshfield, Mark Soper & his wife Joanne from Florida, Susan Hope from Andover and Lee Soper & his wife Lori from Rockland. As well as grandchildren Kari, Sarah, Eric, Jackie, Andrea, Michael, Tory, Brittany, Elias, and Aidan, and 13 great grandchildren. Along with many nieces & nephews.

Family and friends are invited to Charlie’s visiting hours on Thursday January 2nd from 4:00-6:30 PM, with a funeral service to follow at 6:30 PM at the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. A private burial will take place at a later date at Hillside Cemetery, Abington.
