Lieutenant Joseph "Joe” Hurley died unexpectedly on December 26, 2024, in Boston, Massachusetts at the age of 43.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Kimberly (Cristobal) Hurley; beautiful daughter, Emerson Joy Hurley; parents Maureen (O’Connor) Hurley, William M. Hurley, Valentino A. Cristobal, and Shirley (Alcedo) Cristobal; siblings Rebecca M. Hurley, John C. Hurley, and Jerome V. Cristobal; niece and Goddaughter Tabitha R. Hurley; nephews Patrick J. Hurley, and Henry W. O’Connor Hurley; best friend Joe Campbell; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins of the Hurley, O’Connor, Alcedo, and Cristobal families; and countless friends and fellow firefighters.

Joe was born on September 27, 1981 in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up on the beaches of Scituate, Massachusetts. Joe loved the ocean - body surfing the waves, tossing a football, and looking for sea glass. He was also a hockey player, Boston sports enthusiast, and more recently a University of Michigan football fanatic. Joe served in the US Army. After his service, Joe followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, John, a veteran of the Boston Fire Department, and father, a retired Somerville Fire Chief, and joined the Boston Fire Department himself. Joe served for numerous years and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. His life was devoted to serving his country, city, and everyone around him due to his selfless and generous nature.
Joe married his best friend Kim in Bohol, Philippines and they have called Boston their home together for six years. Together, they lived the most fun-filled and spontaneous life. From traveling the world to making one another laugh sitting at home, they enjoyed the most beautiful love and friendship. Joe and Kim were given their greatest blessing when they welcomed their baby girl Emerson Joy on October 29, 2024. For those eight short weeks, Joe was the most doting, loving, fun, and attentive dad to his "Emmy Baby." He woke up every morning telling Kim, “Look at her! Can you believe she’s ours? We have a perfect baby girl.”

Joe will be always remembered as the most loyal, generous, sarcastic, funny, and all-around great man - always dressed in his finest sweats and sandals year-round. He was known to be quick-witted and never took long to provide a laugh or a pick on the DraftKings app. Jokingly, Joe was loved by all while only liking a few. Regardless, no matter if you knew Joe for five minutes or five years, you would come to know and love him as he always made everyone feel at home.

Kim and Emerson will forever remember Joe as the man that gave them the most incredible life and greatest, most selfless love a person could ever give. He was devoted to protecting and providing for his two girls. The best husband, the best dad.
