Obituary

THOMPSON, CT – Joan M. (Matthews) Meagher, 85, passed away Wednesday, December 25, 2024 in Webster Manor after a period of declining health.

She leaves her husband of 66 years, Robert J. Meagher, Sr.; a daughter, Cheryl A. St.Onge and her husband Paul “Nate” St. Onge of Southbridge, MA; a son, Robert J. Meagher, Jr. and his significant other Karen Miller of Durango, CO; 2 grandchildren, Matthew P. St. Onge and his wife Ina of Falmouth, ME and Danielle M. Boley and her husband James of Glastonbury, CT; 4 great-grandchildren, Elliot and Benjamin St. Onge, and Carter and Norah Boley; a sister, Patricia Molinari and her husband Anthony “Tony” of Grafton, MA; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Scott A. Meagher in 2005.

She was born on July 19, 1939 in Webster, a daughter of Stanley J. and Mary (McNamara) Matthews and graduated from Bartlett High School in 1957. After raising her family she graduated “Magna Cum Laude” with a bachelor's degree and then a master’s degree in finance from Nichols College in Dudley, MA.

Mrs. Meagher began her employment as a teller for the Webster Credit Union, later the Webster First Federal Credit Union, retiring as Vice-President of Operations in 2005.

She was a member of Saint Louis Parish in Webster, MA. Joan loved spending time with her family while camping in the White Mountains and on Lake Ossipee, going to the beach in Rhode Island and making seasonal decorations. For twenty years she looked forward to an annual trip to Aruba with her husband Bob (she called it “her happy place”). Recently she enjoyed playing “Words with Friends” with her daughter. Her life centered around her family.

Her funeral will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025 from Scanlon Funeral Sevice, 38 East Main Street, Webster, MA with a Mass dedicated to both her and her husband Robert at 11:00 AM in Saint Louis Church, 14 Lake Street. They will both be buried in Mount Zion Cemetery, Webster, MA. Visitation for both Joan and Robert will be held from 9:00 to 10:30 AM Saturday in the funeral home before Mass. Donations in her name may be made to Saint Louis Church, 52 Negus Street, Webster, MA 01570 or to the MSCPA, 350 South Huntington, Boston, MA 01230.
