South Boston- Mary C. Orecchio, 88 of South Boston, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and best friend Jean, at Massachusetts General Hospital on December 21, 2024. Born on March 23rd, 1936 in South Boston, she was the devoted daughter of the late Christina (Modistino) and Luigi Orecchio grew up in South Boston, where she was educated at St. Peter and Paul Catholic School and went on to graduate from Cardinal Cushing Catholic High School in 1954.
Mary worked for many years in the garment industry for Apparel Manufacturing as a floor manager. Later in life she took a position at Massachusetts General Hospital, working in the Radiology Library, where she assisted physicians in their requests for patient x-rays and reports. Upon retirement, Mary relocated to the Foley Apartments in South Boston and resided there until her death.
Mary was very active in her new community and joined the task force and held the position of treasurer for ten years and then became secretary. In addition to these roles, she also volunteered her time organizing several holiday celebrations throughout the year. At this time, she met Jean Moschella, a fellow resident, who would become her best friend and they would enjoy this friendship for more than twenty years.
Mary was very family oriented and enjoyed spending time, especially holidays, with her extended family. Living in South Boston, and on the parade route, she hosted her annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration for all her family to enjoy.
Mary enjoyed traveling and was fortunate enough to visit family in Italy on two occasions. She also enjoyed many trips within the United States with extended family members.
Mary is survived by her brother Anthony Orecchio and his wife Florence of Medford, and her sister-in law Dorothy Orecchio of Longmeadow. Dear sister of the late John Orecchio and his wife Anna, and the late Nicholas Orecchio. She also leaves many loving nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Monday, December 30th at Casper Funeral Home, 187 Dorchester St. Boston, MA. Relatives and Friends are respectively invited to calling hours, Monday, December 30th from 9:00 am-10:30 am with a funeral mass to follow at 11 am at the Gate of Heaven Parish, 615 East 4th St, South Boston MA. Internment at Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamaica Plain.
In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary’s memory to the MGH Giving Fund or the charity of one’s choice.
