VARDARO, Mario of Roslindale, passed away peacefully at his home on December 21, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 6, 1928, in East Boston and later Jamaica Plain to the late Angelina (DeVito) and Salvatore Vardaro, Mario lived a life defined by integrity, resilience, love of family, and an unwavering “get it done” attitude.

Mario was the devoted husband of the late Mary Ann (Petrie), and the cherished father of Mary Daly and her husband Daniel of Brighton, Carol Vardaro of Quincy, and John Vardaro and his wife Hope of West Roxbury. He was a proud and loving “Papa” to his grandchildren Caroline Daly, Daniel Daly, and Michael Vardaro, who were a constant source of joy and pride throughout his life.

Mario was the dear brother of the late Gaetano Vardaro, Louise DiPerri, Anthony Vardaro, Joseph Vardaro, Yolanda Barbone, and Ann Modugno. He will be deeply missed by his family including his in-laws, nieces, nephews, and his dear neighbors and friends.

A man of remarkable strength, Mario faced the unimaginable challenge of battling five different types of cancer. Through it all, he showed incredible grace and determination, never losing his sense of humor or his will to keep fighting. His unwavering strength in the face of adversity served as a powerful example to those who knew him, and his resilience was a testament to his enduring spirit.

Mario's life was marked by a fierce devotion to his family and country. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where his bravery earned him the Medal of Honor from the Korean government in 2018. His commitment to service continued through his active involvement with the American Legion, where he served as commander and adjutant.

Mario’s legacy of kindness, strength, and determination will live on through his family, friends, and all who were touched by his life. He leaves behind a lasting imprint of love and honor, reminding us of the power of integrity and the importance of never giving up, no matter the challenges we face.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during visiting hours on Friday, December 27th from 4-8 p.m. at the William J. Gormley Funeral Home, 2055 Center St., West Roxbury.
