Obituary

Richard Hoover, 64, of Smithfield passed away at home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer on December 15, 2024.

Son of the late Howard “Gene” and Vivian Hoover, he is survived by his best friend, soulmate, and wife of over 38 years, Maury, his daughter Colleen Hoover and her husband Joe Piecuch, his daughter Carolyn Hoover, his brother Mike Hoover and his wife Diane, his sister Debbie Konicki and her husband Frank, as well as nephews Chris and Derek Konicki, Jeff Hoover and his wife Casey, and his stepmother Mary Hoover.

Spending time with his family was his utmost joy. The love he shared with his wife was inspiring and left an impression on all who were lucky enough to witness them. Family vacations and movie nights continued throughout his life.

Rick was known to take people under his wing, forming lifelong bonds. Though that may not protect them from some quick-witted teasing, he was extremely generous and protective of those that he loved.

Always a supporter of first responders, Rick devoted his life to public safety. He was very proud to tell people that he had been an EMT for nearly 50 years and would brag that his license number was only 4 digits! His career began on a rescue and he worked for several private ambulance companies before ending with almost 4 decades of service at Bryant University.

A lifelong fan of the Miami Dolphins and Boston Bruins, Rick was also an avid motorcycle rider and long time member of the Rhode Island Retreads Motorcycle Club. He’d blast his eclectic playlists as he explored the backroads near and far on his Harley. At any point you might hear Buddy Holly, The Beach Boys, The Partridge Family, Queen, a cappella groups, bubble-gum pop, country, or even classical coming from his speakers. In his down time, he enjoyed working on and customizing his bike with assorted gadgets and accessories, restoring gum-ball machines and fire equipment, collecting sports memorabilia, or simply relaxing with his dogs, Bitty and Navi, in front of the TV. More recently, he enjoyed spreading cheer as Santa Claus for children, family, friends, and their pets.

Rick will be missed and always loved by many. His funeral services were private.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
