Obituary

Edwart Khatchatourian of Boston, formerly of Belmont, age 77, passed away on Wednesday, December 11th after a brief stay at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His sudden ailment and subsequent death drew loving family from all over the world to his bedside.

Edwart was a disciplined family man who took pride in guiding his sons through life with Anahid, his wife of 46 years. Edwart married Anahid Yegumians in March of 1978 at St Stephen's Apostolic Church of Greater Boston. They went on to raise two sons together in Belmont. As the proud father of Alex Khatchatourian and Alex’s fiancée Linda of Paris, France and Patrick Khatchatourian and Patrick’s wife Laura of Watertown, Edwart was thrilled to add the title of grandfather three years ago with the birth of his first grandson and namesake, Charles(“Charlie”) Edward Khatchatourian of Watertown. Edwart had just become a grandfather to his second grandson, Wilson Scott Khatchatourian of Watertown, who was born six weeks before his passing. Charlie had enjoyed a close and active relationship with Edwart. Edwart was looking forward to a similar bond with Wilson before his sudden passing. Charlie adored Edwart and had delighted in the time they spent together. As a new preschooler and soon-to-be big brother, Charlie was nervous about starting school in September. Edwart and Anahid eased his transition with a memorable visit to Charlie’s preschool for their Grandparent’s Day Celebration. Whether Edwart was patiently holding newborn Charlie in his arms, playing toddler Charlie’s high-energy games, or supporting preschooler Charlie in his new environment, the love Edward had for Charlie and his family was undoubtable.

Edwart’s care for Charlie was only the latest example in his lifelong commitment to family. Edwart was the middle child in a blended family of five children. He was born in Tehran, Iran on July 14, 1947 to Armenian genocide survivor father Hartoun Khatchatourian and mother Hratchouhi. Although his mother died when Edwart was only 5, he was fortunate to gain a devoted second mother with his father’s second marriage to Zita. Edwart enjoyed a loving relationship with his older sister Rima Khayat of Summit, New Jersey and his deceased older brother Seroush “Seroj” Khatchatourian and Seroj’s living wife Elyse of Watertown. He also nurtured close, caring bonds with his baby brothers Arik Khatchatourian and the deceased Armond Khatchatourian; he acted as a father figure to them both after the passing of his own father. Edwart’s loving care also extended to his niece Tina Khayat and nephew Nasri Khayat of Summit, New Jersey and niece Mila Khatchatourian and nephew Eric Khatchatourian of Watertown. Finally, Edwart was a devoted dog parent to several toy poodles – the deceased Token, the deceased Toffee, the deceased Candy, and living Dino.

While his family bonds are Edwart’s legacy, he was also very accomplished professionally. Edwart’s discipline, organization, and loyalty was evident in his accounting career. He worked as an accountant for Interstate Electric Equipment Company, a small family-owned business, for nearly 40 years. His accounting career was the culmination of a personal journey that began as a boy in Iran, where he dreamed of achieving success in the U.S. someday. Edwart’s journey took him from Tehran to Waltham, where he earned a B.S. in Accounting from Bentley University. He began his international scholarship with stops at a boarding school in Switzerland and language schools in New York City and Worcester, MA studying the English language. English was the third language Edwart gained fluency in, having already mastered Armenian and Farsi. Ultimately, he became quite proficient in French, too.

Edwart’s skill in languages complemented his citizenship in three countries – Iran, the U.S., and France – and his love for traveling. Upon retirement, Edwart and Anahid spent half of the year in the Back Bay of Boston and the other half in Cannes, France. He nurtured relationships with family and friends in both Massachusetts, Paris, London and Southern France. Personally, Edwart was known for his love of good food with good friends and family. He enjoyed dining out and sightseeing across Europe as a retiree.

Edwart’s passing is felt internationally. The family graciously accepts flowers or donations in Edwart’s name to St. Stephen’s Armenian Apostolic Church of Greater Boston. Family and friends are invited to Edwart’s funeral service on December 18th at 11:00 AM at St. Stephen’s Church, 38 Elton Ave, Watertown, MA.
