Obituary

Adele H. Guay, 88, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2024 at Summercrest Senior Living in Newport N.H. Adele was born in Manchester N.H. on September 11, 1936 to Lucien and Beatrice Guay.

Adele attended St. Anthony’s High School and then attended Notre Dame College where she received her Bachelor’s Degree and became a nun with the Sisters of Holy Cross. She then went on to receive her Master’s Degree in Music at Catholic University in Washington D.C.

After 15 years in the convent, Adele chose a new path; and that was teaching. She embarked on a 35 year teaching career at St. Joseph’s Junior High School in Manchester teaching English, religion, music, and science. Her positive impacts on students was evident and far reaching.

She also gave her time to coach individual students for the National Spelling Bee and spent countless hours teaching piano. It brought her true joy to work with young people and watch them excel.

Adele was fortunate to have found a lifelong best friend in Melva Neverett. “Mel and Del” as they were affectionately called, had many adventures. They loved to travel and spend time with family and friends. They always gave of themselves and truly had generous spirits.

Adele was proud of her Canadian French heritage and studied her family’s lineage. Spending time at the “camp” on Lake Sunapee in the summers was a favorite of hers as well as time at York Beach, Maine. A dog lover, Adele was especially fond of the Afghan Hound and Greyhound breeds and advocated for the retired race dog breed.

Adele was predeceased by her parents Lucien and Beatrice Guay, and a brother Louis Guay. Surviving family members are her 3 sisters: Charlotte Brown, Francoise Goyette, and Helene Guay. Adele had a very close relationship with her nieces and nephews and she never missed an event for them. She was at every holiday, birthday, graduation, and wedding. Jocelyn, Monique, Kelley, Chip, Damien, Claude, Jennifer (godchild), and Libby will always cherish the time they spent with their Aunt Adele. Adele is also survived by her beloved godchildren Yvonne & Andrea, many great nieces and nephews, as well as the Masuku Family, whom Adele loved dearly and were like family to her.
