Gregg Lewis Lint, Age 80, of Franklin, MA, passed away peacefully at home on December 10, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Born on December 21, 1943, in South Bend, Indiana, Gregg was the son of Otis and Eileene Lint. His family later moved to St. Joseph, Michigan, where Gregg spent his formative years, developing a lifelong appreciation for history and scholarship.
After high school, Gregg pursued higher education with a passion for history and academics. He earned both his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Central Michigan University before going on to achieve his PhD at Michigan State University, an institution that would remain dear to his heart throughout his life.
Gregg’s academic career took him to teaching, where he met the love of his life, Susie, who would become his devoted wife. They were married in August of 1971. Soon after they moved to Framingham, Massachusetts, where Gregg began his distinguished 41-year career at the Massachusetts Historical Society.
As Editor and later Senior Editor, Gregg made monumental contributions to the field of documentary editing, most notably through his pivotal role in the publication of 18 volumes of The Papers of John Adams. His work was not only foundational to the preservation and understanding of American history but also deeply influential in the scholarly community.
Gregg’s passion for education led him to present his research at numerous academic conferences and teacher seminars, inspiring new generations of historians and scholars. His colleagues respected him as a diplomatic historian of the highest order, and his work continues to be a legacy within the field.
Gregg was deeply committed to his family, who were his greatest joy. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Susie; their son, Peter, and daughter-in-law, Ashley, along with granddaughters Olivia and Charlotte, of Wrentham, MA. He is also survived by his brother, William, and his wife, Patty, of Saugatuck, MI, as well as his cousin Darlene Perron and her husband, Grant, of Kalamazoo, MI.
In addition to his family, Gregg’s love for Michigan State University was a defining aspect of his life, with Michigan State Football and Basketball occupying a close second place in his heart. His passion for these teams, along with his enduring love for the state of Michigan, were qualities he happily passed down to his granddaughters. Gregg also cherished his time spent in Michigan, particularly during summers at the family cabin in Mackinaw City, where he found peace and joy by the shores of Lake Michigan, enjoying a good book and the serenity of the water.
Gregg was not only a scholar and historian but also a kind and caring individual who made a lasting impact on everyone he met. His generosity of spirit, warmth, and intellect will be deeply missed by his family, colleagues, and friends.
A celebration of Gregg’s life will be held on Sunday, December 22nd from 1-3 p.m. at the Charles F. Oteri and Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St.
Following the service, friends and family are invited to a luncheon at Gregg’s favorite restaurant, The Rome Restaurant in Franklin.
Interment will take place at a later date in Bliss Township, Michigan, where Gregg will be laid to rest near his roots.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Gregg’s memory to the Massachusetts Historical Society/Papers of John Adams, 1154 Boylston St., Boston, MA 02215, an organization that was central to his life’s work.
