Mario C. "Avo" Silva, 74, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at Lowell General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on August 12, 1950, in São Miguel, Azores, Portugal, Mario was the beloved son of the late João Paiva Carreiro Silva and the late Maria Espirotosanto (Ferreira de Mello) Silva. He was raised and educated in São Miguel before serving honorably in the Portuguese military in Angola. Following his service, Mario immigrated to the United States, settling in Lowell to be near his future wife, Emily. The couple married in 1974 and built a beautiful life together.
A proud and active member of the local Portuguese community, Mario was a devoted communicant of Saint Anthony’s Church. He cherished Portuguese music, especially the work of Jorge Ferreira, and found great joy in fishing trips to Gloucester. Mario’s life was centered around his family and his passions—cooking, singing, and dancing.
Mario was also a skilled finish carpenter, dedicating his career to crafting beautiful homes and structures throughout the Greater Lowell area.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Emily Silva; his son, Mario Silva, and his wife, Kimberly, of Lowell; his cherished grandchildren: Halie Ryder-Silva, Mario Silva Jr., Corbin Silva, Christopher Silva, Samara Silva, and McKayla Silva; and his great-grandchildren: Ariah Silva, Emilia Silva, Anthony Torres Jr., and Kalani Silva. He also leaves behind his brother, Victor Silva, and his wife, Maria Gilda Silva, as well as many extended family members and dear friends.
Mario was predeceased by his parents and his beloved son, Michael Silva.
