Obituary

Jose M. Sostre, 63, of Worcester, passed away on Friday, December 6th at UMass Memorial Hospital – University Campus. He leaves his parents, Miguel A. Sostre, Sr. and Gloria M. (Rivera) Sostre; a sister, Marissa Sostre-Hernandez and her husband, Esteban; a brother, Miguel A. Sostre, Jr. all of Worcester; a nephew, Gabriel A. Estevez of Webster; a niece, Samaris J. Escobar and her husband, J. Marrio of Oxford; four great nieces and nephews, Sharleen Estevez, Amadys Escobar, Alianna Escobar, and J. Aiden Escobar; and many supportive extended family and friends.

Born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, Jose moved to Worcester, Massachusetts, where he became a cherished resident and friend to many. Jose proudly served as a Marine veteran before pursuing his education at Worcester State University. For many years, he worked as a dedicated teacher’s aide at Worcester East Middle School. He was known for his unwavering commitment to the students and faculty, offering support, encouragement, and a warm smile to everyone he encountered. His strong sense of community made him a pillar of the school, where he was more than just a colleague—he was a friend, mentor, and inspiration to those around him.

A man of deep faith, Jose was devoted to God and actively participated in the YMCA’s Livestrong program, living his life with a passion for wellness and service. He was especially drawn to gospel music, often filling his home with the uplifting sounds of praise. Music was a great love of his, and he enjoyed exploring different genres, always with a special place in his heart for songs that celebrated life and faith.

Jose had a deep appreciation for history, sports, and old movies, which he loved to share with others. He enjoyed engaging in thoughtful discussions on a wide range of topics, always eager to learn and share his knowledge. But perhaps one of his most notable traits was his impeccable sense of fashion, particularly his love for shoes. His well-chosen footwear was a reflection of his personality—always stylish, always unique, and always leaving a lasting impression.
Jose’s legacy is one of kindness, generosity, and community. He was a man who lived with purpose, never missing an opportunity to serve others and share his joy for life. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

His funeral service will be held on Monday, December 16th beginning at 10:00 a.m. in O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Avenue, Paxton. Calling hours will be on Sunday, December 15th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
