John Phillip Brunelli, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2024, at the age of 80. Born on August 30, 1944, in Norwood, MA, John lived a life of service, integrity, and unwavering devotion to his family and community.
John graduated from Marian High School in Framingham, MA, in 1962. He attended Dean Junior College, earned a bachelor’s degree from Curry College, and went on to receive his MBA from Babson College in 1973. His dedication to education was a reflection of his commitment to growth and excellence in every aspect of his life.
John proudly served his country in the United States Navy from July 1964 to June 1968 during the Vietnam War. Stationed aboard the USS Eldorado, he demonstrated exemplary dedication and bravery. For his service, John was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal. His military achievements reflected his unwavering commitment to his country and fellow service members.
John’s career with the United States Postal Service began while he was attending college, working as a clerk carrier in the Franklin and Dedham post offices. In 1974, he was hired as a Job Analyst in Philadelphia and was later promoted to Director of Finance in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. This marked his entry into postal administration.
In 1980, John was appointed Postmaster of the Mansfield, MA, post office, a role he held with distinction for 26 years. During his tenure, he was instrumental in the planning and construction of Mansfield’s new post office, collaborating closely with USPS and the town to bring the project to completion. His leadership and dedication left a lasting impact on both the postal service and the community he served.
John is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia Brunelli, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage on April 14, 2024. Together, they built a life full of love, laughter, and cherished memories. John’s heart swelled with pride during every milestone they achieved, and his joy was most apparent in their laughter and smiles during their time together. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and they brought him immeasurable happiness in return.
John also shared a special and enduring bond with Karrin and Stefanie. His ability to connect with them as individuals, and as mothers to his beloved grandchildren, was a reflection of his unparalleled love for family.
John was also a devoted swim official for over thirty years, officiating countless meets locally as well as across the country with precision and care. He played an instrumental role in establishing the Collegiate Swimming Officials Association, leaving a legacy of excellence and professionalism that continues to benefit the sport he loved.
