Suzetta Mae “Suzy” Chambers
July 21, 1943 - December 4, 2024
Suzetta Mae “Suzy” (Shaffer) Chambers, 81, of Anderson passed away on December 4, 2024, at Community Hospital in Anderson following a sudden illness.
She was born on July 21, 1943, in Anderson, IN to the late Harold and Alice (Noland) Shaffer. She was a 1961 graduate of Madison Heights High School and attended Indiana Business College.
She was a full-time stay-at-home parent raising her two sons and planning year-round activities that included her three nephews that lived next door. Summer days always held plenty of activities from bike rides, swimming, visiting parks, playing all sports and sledding and building snowmen in the winter. She always volunteered at the school and attended countless field trips. She provided cookies after all Little League baseball games and coffee cake for Friday morning free throw practices for basketball games. For many years she handmade all the Halloween costumes for her sons and nephews.
She volunteered at the Madison County Historical Society for many years where she loved to spend time working and sharing time with the entire team. She loved doing genealogy research for the countless people that wrote the Society asking for help tracing their ancestors. She approached this task like she was researching her own family and donated all the money she received back to the Society. In 2009 she received the Elwood H. Phillips Award from the Society for her years of service and she also received the President’s Volunteer Service Award, a prestigious national honor for community service.
She did lifelong research of her ancestry including a trip to England to see where her family lived. She had a software program that had over 20,000 family members over the years of research.
She was a member of Springport Christian Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, The Jamestowne Society, and the Daughters of the American Colonists. She also worked for several years at the Festival of Trees at the Paramount Theatre in Anderson decorating trees for the auction.
She spent a lifetime in service to others and organizations. She cared for several elderly friends over the years and made a home for several stray dogs and over 30 feral cats. She was a tireless worker, who absolutely loved spending time outdoors working in her yard and woods and enjoyed feeding all the birds and squirrels.
She always gave to several charitable organizations, particularly for the military and children’s organizations. She wanted to be behind the scenes and never take credit for the things she did. For many years she would write about the day’s events on her wall calendar and the family would love spending time reading more about her life and daily events.
Above all, she cherished every moment she spent with her family and friends and would tell you every time you were with her. She enjoyed being at birthdays and cookouts. She never failed to tell you how much she loved you and give you a big hug. Every birthday you would get a call on the minute of your birth to wish you a happy birthday and tell you about the day you were born.
She is survived by her husband, Fritz S. Chambers of Anderson whom she married on June 4, 1966 at the Daleville Methodist Church; two sons, Chris (Jodi McDonald) Chambers of Indianapolis and Bryan (Timothy Malinovsky) Chambers of Orlando, Florida; two grandchildren, Emilia Chambers-Malinovsky and Jake Werner of Indianapolis; a sister, Jeanie (John) Babb of Athens, Alabama; a sister-in-law, Diane Norris of Noblesville; and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Alice Shaffer.
Funeral service will be at 2:00pm on Friday, December 13, 2024, at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service with Pastor Tad Mills officiating. A private burial will take place in Tomlinson Cemetery in Muncie.
Visitation will be from 12:00pm – 2:00pm on Friday at the funeral home.
