John P. Cloonan formerly of Watertown, MA currently Roslindale, MA passed away suddenly at age 89. He was born to loving Irish parents Catherine and John. He was the second oldest of four siblings. Mary “Mame” of Watertown and predeceased by his brother Paul (Kathleen Coughlan) of Wellesley and Albert “Al’ of Watertown. The four siblings grew up as a tightly knit unit, always coming together to take care of Al, who struggled with cerebral palsy. After high school, John joined the U.S. Air Force at age 18, so proud to serve his country. John enjoyed his time in the service making memories in Okinawa, South Korea, and various United States bases.
He met his loving wife Nancy Hurley of Jamaica Plain and married in 1963. They purchased their home in Roslindale shortly after their marriage which spanned 61 years and raised their children Steven (Kathleen Roche) of Milton, Marianne Saleda of Dedham, Carole Collins (Thomas) of Hyde Park, and Jack (Lisa Cormier) of Norwood.
John was blessed with nine grandchildren, Jack, Michael, Megan, Kate, Emily, Colleen, Brendan, Raymond, and Danny, in addition to many loving nieces and nephews. John was a devoted family man, always beaming with pride and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He especially loved to attend his grandchildren’s sporting events, rain or shine. He loved to share stories about his childhood, his time in the service, and working as the Director of State Elections for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
His legacy is cemented in the love his family has for him and the memories of John that they will hold on to forever.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Brady & Fallon Funeral Home 10 Tower St. (Opp. Forest Hills MBTA Station) Jamaica Plain on Thursday December 5 at 1 PM. Relatives and friends are invited and may visit with his family at the funeral home from 12 noon until 1 pm prior to commencement of the funeral service. Interment will then follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
