Patricia Faye Kocen, beloved mother, partner, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2024, at the age of 86. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on December 22, 1937, to Eva E. (Parsons) Hill and Floyd C. Hill, Patricia grew up surrounded by the unique and vibrant world of circus life, as her parents were acrobats in The Hagenbeck–Wallace Circus. During her childhood, Patricia was lovingly raised in Roslindale by her aunt, Gertrude V. (Parsons) Backman, while her parents and extended family were traveling with the circus. She shared a special bond with her beloved cousin, Naida Chapman, whose friendship and love enriched her life. She moved with her family around 1970 to Hampton, Virginia, to be closer to her sister, Carol Jean (Hill) Aspell, and Robert Aspell, and her sister’s children Steven, David, and James. She worked for Fort Monroe while earning her associates degree at Thomas Nelson Community College, while volunteering at the 4-H Club and serving as a crossing guard. After returning to Boston around 1981 in order to take care of her mother, Patricia dedicated her professional life to serving others, retiring from a rewarding career with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at Shattuck Hospital. She was a deeply compassionate and hardworking individual who touched the lives of all who knew her, including her adopted ragdoll cats, Buddy and Baby. She was the loving mother of Karen L. Stanley and her husband William Stanley of Leominster, Richard W. William Kocen, Jr. of Boston, and Eric P. Kocen of Ipswich. She was the beloved grandmother of Henry, Billy, and Eric Stanley, all of whom brought immense joy and pride to her life. Patricia was previously married to the late Richard William Kocen, Sr., of Weymouth. Later, she found companionship and love with Thomas Murphy of Roslindale, with whom she shared many happy years until his death on November 22, 2011. Patricia's warmth, kindness, and love of family will be remembered always. Her life was one of dedication, resilience in the face of hardships, and joy in the simple pleasures of working with the earth to create lovely gardens. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Patricia’s life during a Funeral Mass at Saint Thomas Aquinas Parish, 95 South St. Jamaica Plain on Wednesday December 4 at 10 a.m. Her final resting place will take place at The Gardens at Gethsemane Cemetery. Patricia’s legacy lives on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, extended family, and countless others who were fortunate to know her.
