John J. Mitcheson, 89

Dateline: Mansfield, MA

John J. Mitcheson, age 89, passed away on Saturday, November 30 , 2024. Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late George and Harriet V. (Cooney) Mitcheson. He was a resident of Fall River for over 50 years where he worked for the Fall River Fire Department as a firefighter and an EMT. After his retirement he resided in Portsmouth RI and recently made his home in Mansfield MA.

During his retirement he enjoyed many years developing his love of art, including woodcarving and acrylic painting. He was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed boating. John was known for his kindhearted and generous spirit as he gave to his family and served others.

He was the brother of the late James, Alfred and George Mitcheson, Harriet Butler, Mary Butler, Joan Gagliardi, Jane Carreiro, and Rita Lindo.

Mr. Mitcheson is survived by his two children Nancy (Mitcheson) Mathews of Charleston, SC and a son John J Mitcheson Jr of Apex NC, his two grandchildren Jesse Ghoman and his wife Alexandra and Jenna Winters and her husband Collier also of Charleston, SC, as well as five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his longtime companion Cecelia Robbins.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude for the excellent care that Mr. Mitcheson received from the staff of HopeHealth Hospice Services and the HopeHealth Hospice Hulitar Center.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend his funeral service on Thursday, December 5th at 11:30 A.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main Street, Mansfield.

Military honors will be rendered at the conclusion of the services at the funeral home on Thursday. Burial will be held privately at a later date.

Visiting hours are omitted and those wishing may remember John with a donation in his memory made to the HopeHealth Hospice Center, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, Rhode Island 02904.
