Manuel F. Mendonca, age 87, a resident of Lowell for more then 6 decades, passed away peacefully early Friday morning November 22,2024 at The RegalCare at Lowell Nursing Facility after battling a long illness.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, and was born January 11,1937 in Ponta Garca, Sao Miguel, Azores, to his parents Manuel Vieira and Maria Elisa (Resendes) Mendonca. He relocated to the United States in 1956 and settled in Lowell, MA. He was married to Georgette T. (Tremblay) Mendonca with whom he celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on August 26, 2024.
Manuel was a graduate of the former Lowell Technical Institute and was employed by Raytheon Corporation for 43 years as a Production Control Supervisor prior to retiring in 2002. In his younger days Manny was very active in the Portuguese community of Lowell. He was the treasurer of the Portuguese American Center, Secretary of the Portuguese American Civic League of Lowell, Vice President and Secretary of Lodge #24 of the Portuguese Continental Union, Secretary of the former Lowell Union of Portuguese Americans and a contributor and correspondent in Lowell of the former Portuguese Daily News of New Bedford. He was also a member of the Holy Ghost Society and Trinity Holy Ghost Society.
Manuel was a dedicated Catholic and was a member of the Immaculate Conception, Sacred Heart, Saint Anthony and Holy Family Parishes of Lowell. Manuel was also and avid reader, hobbyist and he enjoyed following the Red Sox, Patriots and the Lisbon & Benfica soccer teams in Portugal. He was a member of The Lowell Historical Society, and collector of items related to the history of Lowell, as well as several Numismatic and Philatelic societies worldwide. He enjoyed seeing and spending time with his grandchildren & great grandchildren.
Besides his loving wife, he is survived by 3 sons Daniel M. Mendonca and his partner Karen Green of Haverhill, MA. Manuel F,V. Mendonca of Tewksbury, MA and Jason V. Mendonca of Salem, NH. One daughter Suzette M.Singster and her husband Brian of Derry, NH. He also has 7 grandchildren Kaylee Mendonca, Corey Mendonca, Brittany Fletcher, Alyson Mendonca, Nicole Mendonca, Celina Singster and Peter Singster. He is also survived by 6 great grandchildren, two brothers Joseph Mendonca & his wife Maria F. Mendonca of Lowell and Anthony Mendonca of Methuen, MA as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his son James J. Mendonca who passed away November 13, 2024 and his brother John Mendonca and sister Maria Estrela Silva, and his granddaughter Brianna D. Singster
On Tuesday, December 3, 2024 all are welcome to attend his calling hours from 4 - 8 p.m. at McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell 978-458-6816. His funeral will begin on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by his funeral mass at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Parish, 30 Grafton Street, Lowell. Procession will follow for burial at St. Patrick Cemetery on Gorham Street in Lowell.
