Alfred “Geno” Eugene Hurd, Jr. of Quincy, MA passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the age of 83 on Saturday, November 23, 2024. Geno was born in Georgetown, MA to the late Alfred E. Hurd, Sr. and Ruth (Eustace) Hurd. He was a proud member of the US Army 101st Airbourne Division with 36 career jumps. He worked in construction for many years, in addition to working at the Pine Street Inn in Boston, where he met his beloved wife. In his retirement, Geno started Bayview Canvas and was a well-known face at many marinas in the South Shore and the unofficial “mayor” of The Clipper Yacht Club in Quincy.
Geno was a devoted husband of 32 years to Linda Rae (Mandelson) Hurd and a loving father to Garry Hurd of Florida, Deanna Hurd and her husband Miguel of Quincy, Kevin Hurd and his wife Judith of Quincy, Kelly Soto of Florida, and Tanya Halligan and her husband Jeremy of Pittsburgh. He was a doting Popi to 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his siblings Mary Jane Sherburne and her husband Robert of New Hampshire, Douglas Hurd and his wife Brenda of New Hampshire, Renee Theofilopoulos and her husband Billy of Haverhill, and Laurie Dion of New Hampshire. Geno is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews as well as many close friends who turned into family including Andrea Kidney and her husband Steve of Brockton, Quentin Lam and his wife Hilarie of Easton, Naomi LaRue of Missouri, Scott Colleary of Braintree, and Craig Moore of Quincy.
Geno was a quiet man but those who knew him enjoyed his sharp wit and quick sense of humor. He enjoyed watching old westerns, NASCAR, working in his shop, fast cars, and spending time with his family. Geno loved the ocean whether it be watching the boats go by, fishing, or just going for a ride out to Boston Light and loved going to Cape Cod whenever he could.
People are invited to celebrate Geno’s life on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at 1pm at Groveland Congregational Church at 4 King St., Groveland, MA 01834 to be followed by a small reception for close family and friends in the church’s fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.
