Edwin Roy Brenton, 90, of Weymouth, passed away on November 19 after a
long illness.
Born and raised in Jamaica Plain, Roy was one of 13 children of Mary
(Cheeseman) and Richard Brenton, a fisherman who perished in the sinking of the
trawler Medford in 1945 when Roy was 11. Roy enjoyed a close and loving bond
with his siblings and their spouses; in their later years, many of them gathered
weekly at Old Country Buffet in Walpole for “Lunch with the Brothers.”
After high school Roy joined the Army, and was stationed in Germany
during the Korean War. He then served as a patrolman for the Boston Police
Department for 37 years. Extremely tall and handsome, Roy stopped traffic
(literally and figuratively) at the corner of Tremont and Boylston streets. After his
retirement from BPD, Roy worked as a court security officer at the Moakley
Federal Courthouse in Boston, where his friendly smile charmed co-workers,
attorneys and judges alike.
In 1982, Roy met the love of his life, Patricia, while writing her a parking
ticket outside her beauty shop in Uphams Corner. Pat and Roy were married for
35 years before her death in 2019. They enjoyed traveling to places such as Italy,
Greece, Mexico, Florida and especially Las Vegas, as well as occasional trips to
Foxwoods. Roy loved to play cards, particularly cribbage, watching New England
sports especially the Red Sox, and spending time with family and friends. His smile
lit up a room and his kindness knew no bounds. Roy was generous and
sentimental; he hand-picked birthday and holiday cards to give to loved ones, and
never forgot an anniversary or other special occasion. Making others happy was a
gift that Roy freely shared – and when they reciprocated, it often brought a tear to
his eye. A thoughtful note or act of love meant more to Roy than any material gift.
He will be dearly missed by those lucky enough to have had him in their lives.
Roy is survived by his children, Kristian Keyes of Weymouth, Kimberley
Keyes and husband Austin Anderson of Hanover, Mary Smith of Florida, William
Fitzgerald of RI, Gary Brenton and wife Christina of China, Roy Brenton and wife
Laureen of Wareham, and Nancy Carlson and husband Christopher of Maine. He
also leaves nine grandchildren, including Jacob and Jacquelyn Steadman of
Weymouth and Liam and Landon Anderson of Hanover, and several great-
grandchildren. Roy is survived by his brother Albert Brenton and sister Geraldine
Atherton, and countless nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son
Kenneth Brenton of Connecticut; siblings Bert, Derek, Doris, Frank, Gordon, Helen,
John, Kenneth, Max, and Roberta; and beloved brother-in-law Al Follen. A special
thanks to his faithful caregiver and friend, Ann Walker of Abington.
Roy will be cremated and his services will be private. In honor of Roy, select
or inscribe a heartfelt message on the next card you send to a loved one.
