After a wonderful 90 years on this earth, Ann "Sugar" Long passed away peacefully on November 21, 2024. She was the loving wife of Anthony (Tony) Long who passed on March 21, 2007.
The story goes that she was born on Christmas Day and her father placed her under the Christmas tree and said here is our “Sugar Plum“. So for 90+ years she was known as Sugar.
Sugar's legacy for sure was her joy and love for sharing her delicious meals with family , friends , any one that knew her has been blessed with her talent in the kitchen .
Her mother Mary owned a restaurant in Andrew Square and she went on to open Sugars Deli at the top of Vinton and Dorchester street. It was between John Boyle O”Reilly and John Andrew school so she fed many kids going to school . For .25 cents you got a small sub, chips and a drink. Her penny candy counter was an old school delight .
For 30+ years, Sugar worked for Head Start as their cook . She fed over a million kids she used to say. Her friend and “other “ daughter Jeannie worked together and shared many laughs and memories as they fed the kids of Southie. A special thankyou to Jeannie for loving our mother .
She loved her friends and family . The friends she had and almost all have passed had the time of their lives . Party was their middle names and they traveled and hung down the Square Cafe and if you called to ask “ is my mother there “ it most times was a “no”. We all laugh about the antics . She always told her friends that passed to “save her a seat “, at Table # 2.
So our family knows she is in good hands with God , family and friends. A mothers love knows no boundaries. She loved her sisters and brothers, nieces and nephews, cousins . She was the proud mother of 4 children , 10 grandchildren and 17 great- grandchildren.
