Obituary

Antonio Silva Tavares, 77, of Lowell, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at Lowell General Hospital after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Maria (Brum) Tavares, with whom he shared 52 wonderful years of marriage, celebrating their anniversary this past May.

Born on May 9, 1947, in São Miguel, Azores, Portugal, Antonio grew up in São Miguel, where he was educated and later served in the Portuguese military. Seeking new opportunities, he immigrated to the United States, settling in Lowell. It was there that he met Maria, and the two began their life together, building a family and a home filled with love and devotion.

Antonio took great pride in becoming a U.S. citizen, a goal he achieved in 1984 after years of dedication and hard work.

A talented, self-taught harmonica player, Antonio had a lifelong passion for music. He was known for his warm presence and his appreciation for life’s simple pleasures—whether it was sharing a beer and a cigarette with friends or enjoying the camaraderie of the Blue’s Club in his younger years. He was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church. Tony worked for many years at Prince Spaghetti, where his strong work ethic and friendly nature earned him the respect of his colleagues.

Above all, Antonio was a devoted family man who cherished his wife, children, and grandchildren. In addition to his wife Maria, he is survived by his three sons: Roberto Tavares of Lowell, Nelson Tavares and his wife Marilyn of Lowell, and Liberal Tavares of Lowell. He was a proud grandfather to Isaac and Alexia Tavares.

He also leaves behind his sister, Fatima Perriera, and her husband Alfredo of Fall River, MA, as well as many siblings in São Miguel, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will remember him fondly.

In accordance with his wishes there will be no funeral services. Arrangements by the McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell, MA. www.mcdonoughfuneralhome.com
