Joyce Z. (Gourouses) Cariglia, 79, of Worcester, passed away peacefully, after battling lung cancer, at home on Monday, November 18th, surrounded by loved ones.
She leaves her sister, Loria Gourouses of Worcester; her beloved cousin, Debbie Mann of Edwardsville, IL; her dear lifelong family friends, Jeff Head, Kim McGhee, Melissa O’Brien, and her godson, Joshua Head; as well as many cherished friends. Joyce was predeceased by her husband of 30 years, Samuel J. Cariglia, in 1995; and her life partner, David Williams, in October 2023.
Born in Worcester, Joyce was the daughter of Nikolas and Anna (Coutsonikas) Gourouses. Adversity marked her early years, as her mother passed away in 1959 when Joyce was just 13, followed by her father in 1961. Despite these profound losses, Joyce developed a resilience that guided her throughout her life.
Joyce was very proud of her work and relationships made through the Worcester District Medical Society and after a distinguished 33 year career, she retired as Executive Director in 2018.
Joyce’s true happiness lay in the comforts of home. She loved reading, gardening, entertaining, and creating joyful memories with friends and family. Traveling became another passion, with annual trips to Kennebunk, West Palm Beach, and St. Barts alongside David.
She lost lifelong best friends, Janet Fine Letourneau and Marcia Head Zabarsky, to cancer in 2013. With support from dear friend Cathy Salas, Joyce became a breast cancer survivor in 2016.
Joyce’s life was a testament to resilience, love, and the power of cherished relationships.
Funeral services will be private, with a celebration of her life to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701. O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue is assisting with arrangements.
