SOUTH PORTLAND- On November 18th 2024, Philip F Cheney Jr died in South Portland after a long illness. He was 84 years old.
He is survived by his beloved children, Sandra Boutin and husband, Norman of Standish, ME. Son, Philip F Cheney III and wife, Denise of Arnold, MO and daughter, Joyce Cheney of South Portland, ME and Granddaughters - Stephanie Boutin of Orlando, FL, Veronica Cheney of Arnold, MO and Adele Small of South Portland, ME.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents Philip F Cheney Sr and Adelma (Hood).
Phil was born on September 27th, 1940, in Portland, ME. Phil lived his whole life in South Portland and graduated from South Portland High School. Phil frequently attended high school reunions and he enjoyed lifelong friendships with classmates.
A remarkable person with a strong work ethic and sense of community, Phil learned the trade of an auto mechanic from his father and worked alongside him at the family business, Fred’s Auto Service in SoPo for decades and then after closing the business for retirement, he went on to get his Class B CDL license to drive a bus, an accomplishment he was very proud of.
Phil’s hobbies included working, driving, helping friends, and anything to do with classic cars. He always enjoyed going for a cup of coffee with “The Boy’s Club”. Phil loved dogs his whole life and would often always have a dog in his truck.
Phil was a member of the Lion’s Club for several years and volunteered for Middle School Track Meets for many years. Phil was the most caring and polite person you would have ever had the pleasure to meet.
A celebration of life for Philip F Cheney Jr is scheduled for Sunday, November 24th from 10am-1pm at the South Portland Community Center, 21 Nelson Road, South Portland, in the Casco Bay Room.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be sent to the Animal Welfare Society.
