Obituary

Nadine Basta, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and wife of the late Dr. Nabil Basta, passed away on November 16, 2024 at the age of 90 at her home in Wellesley, Massachusetts.

Nadine was born in Bucharest, Romania. At an early age, she moved with her family to Alexandria, Egypt, where she attended and graduated from the English Girls' College. Many of the women she met during those transformative years became Nadine's lifelong friends. It was there that Nadine developed her love of reading, learning, and swimming.

In 1967, Nadine and her husband Bill emigrated to the United States, initially settling in Wrentham and, five years later, moving into the home that Nadine's two sons Karim and Paul called home in Wellesley. Nadine was a well-known figure in the Wellesley community. She served as President of the local League of Women’s Voters for several years, and she worked for Simon & Schuster as a liaison for touring authors, including Tom Wolfe, Bruce Jenner, and Jehan Sadat (the wife of Anwar El- Sadat). For many years, she served as a docent at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where she introduced hundreds of children to the museum's collections of Egyptian art.

Nadine’s and her husband Bill's love of traveling brought them all over the world. They regularly traveled to Egypt with friends and family, gathering in their favorite restaurants to share memories of their days in Egypt. Nadine also loved to spend time in Paris, and adored all things French, including the language, food, and history.

Nadine also loved her home on Cape Cod, gardening in her backyard, and swimming at Hyannis Port beach. She made all guests feel at home – inviting friends for annual spring weekends and keeping her door open for any family member to join for dinner.

Nadine was a devoted community member, a wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She will be missed and remembered.

A visitation will be held at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St., (Rt.16) Wellesley on Friday, Nov. 22 from 11:00am-12:00pm followed by a prayer service at 12:00pm.
