Obituary

Janet McAveeney (Morrissey) 79 of Tewksbury, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday November 13th, 2024. She was the wife of Francis McAveeney, and they were married for 58 years.

She was born on October 3rd, 1945, to parents Ruth Morrissey and Jack Morrissey, both deceased.

She was a devout Catholic, attended Girls Catholic High School in Malden, and grew up in Medford, Massachusetts.

Janet was a licensed daycare provider for many years in Tewksbury. She enjoyed taking care of and teaching children immensely. The well over 100 children she cared for adored her. She would often be seen pushing a carriage over the years, down to Main Street as she was an avid walker. People who knew her would honk their horns and she would give out a massive wave and huge smile to every passing car.

Aside from being an avid walker, she also enjoyed crocheting and went on many cruises with friends. She was a voracious reader, and used to spend every summer up in Ogunquit, Maine.

She got complete enjoyment decorating the house for every major holiday. She went all out for St. Patrick’s Day– she viewed it as the best day of the year. She would start playing Irish songs weeks before and couldn’t wait to sit down for corned beef and cabbage each year.

She is survived by her husband Francis; her three children, Michael McAveeney of Billerica and his wife Jennifer, Steve McAveeney of Cambridge and his wife Julie, and Lauren McAveeney of Tewksbury; six grandchildren, including Thomas, Sarah, and Emma McAveeney; and many nieces, nephews, and other family members.

She is also survived by her three siblings: Marie Sims, Carlene Lee and John Morrissey.

The family pet, 3-year-old English Lab Alfie, will sorely miss her, as they spent hours together daily with her telling him stories, reading to him or just watching Judge Judy reruns together.

Janet will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and anyone lucky enough to know her.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Center for Celiac Research and Treatment via Mass General.
