Obituary

WEBSTER – Gerald J. “Jerry” Canty, Jr, 85, formerly of Webster, died Tuesday, November 12, 2024 in Saint Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford.

He leaves his brother, Thomas Canty of Florida; nieces Deborah Martinek and Lisa Peters of Massachusetts. Nephews Gary Martinek of Maryland, Richard Canty and Chad Pepin of Massachusetts. He was preceded in death by his brother Richard Canty and by his sister Judith Martinek.

He was born on January 14, 1939 in Webster, a son of Gerald J. Canty, Sr. and Theresa L. (Pepka) Canty and was a life-long resident. He was 1956 graduate of Saint Louis High School.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during the Vietnam Era.

Mr. Canty worked as a color tester for the Cranston Print Works Company in Webster.

He was a member of Saint Louis Church and enjoyed basketball. His love of basketball led to teaching future generations how to play the game. Always a kid at heart, he spent hours playing army with his two great-nephews.

His funeral will be held Thursday, November 21, from Scanlon Funeral Service, 38 East Main Street, with a Mass at 11:00 AM in Saint Louis Church, 14 Lake Street. Burial with military honors provided by the Webster-Dudley Veterans Funeral Honor Guard will be in Mount Zion Cemetery. A calling period will take place Thursday morning in the funeral home from 9:00 to 10:30 AM.
