EVERETT H. REED, JR. OBITUARY



Everett H. Reed, Jr., 97, of Indiana, PA died Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at the Communities At Indian Haven, in Indiana, PA.

The son of Everett H. Reed, Sr. and Mary Fyock Reed, he was born on October 6, 1927 in Penn Run, PA.

Everett graduated from Brush Valley High School and Vale Technical Institute in Blairsville, PA.

Mr. Reed was a veteran of World War II and served his country in the Philippines
Islands and Korea.

He met, and after three years courtship, he married Winifred Jane Spicher on June 30, 1950. They enjoyed a long and loving life together. They celebrated their sixty-seventh wedding anniversary on June 30, 2017.

Everett enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also liked to work crossword puzzles and work in his garden.

He attended Grace Methodist Church. Everett was very active in the Boy Scouts and served for several years as a Cubmaster of Pack 27 and Scoutmaster of Troop 27 sponsored by the Grace Methodist Church in Indiana, PA. Everett was a honor member of the Order Of The Arrow and served as advisor of Hopocan Lodge for several years.

Everett served on numerous committees in the Chestnut Ridge district and William Penn Council, where he received numerous awards, including The Bronze Statuette and the Coveted Silver Beaver Award.

With the assistance of several other troops, he organized and supervised the marking of the Armstrong Trail from Cherry Tree to Kittanning.

In 1964, he served as the leader of eleven local scouts that traveled by bus along with another group of scouts and leaders from Grove City, PA on a tour of historical places through the West and to Jueves, Mexico, then to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico for a twelve day high adventure hiking and camping experience.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association. He was a former member of Benjamin Franklin Lodge #753, where he served as Worshipful Master in 1975, and was also a member of William S. Dougherty and Royal Arch Chapter 313. He was also a member of the Coudersport Consistory, where he earned his 32nd Degree.

Everett was employed at the Indiana State Teachers College (now IUP) as a carpenter and was promoted to foreman and then to superintendent of maintenance. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Institutional Engineers. After thirty-eight years of service, he retired from the maintenance department at IUP.

He is survived by his two sons: Daniel Reed of Indiana, PA and Donald Reed and wife, Connie of Indiana, PA; his two grandchildren: David Reed and wife Heather and Jessica Tanaka all of Indiana, PA; his great grandchildren: Joshua, Gracie and Ellie Reed and Christopher and Connor Tanaka, all of Indiana, PA; niece: Susan Coudriet and husband Roger of Clymer and nephew: Gary Spicher and wife Alice of Cherry Tree, PA.

Everett was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Winifred ‘Jane’ (Spicher) Reed in November 2017; his two half- brothers: Clifford and Gary Reed and his half-sister: Patricia Clawson.

He enjoyed spending time with his great grandchildren, whom he loved dearly and always looked forward to their time together.

Everett wrote this obituary himself, just as he wrote his wife, Jane’s obituary in 2017.

Family and friends will be received from 6-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at the Rairigh Funeral Home, Ltd. in Hilldale, PA and again from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the 11:00 a.m. funeral service on Friday, November 15, 2024 at the funeral home. Pastor Jerry Hoch will be the officiant. Interment will follow at the Citizens Cemetery in Cherry Tree, PA.

Military honors will be observed.
