John C. Cloherty, age 90, a resident of Winchester for 44 years, passed away on November 4, 2024. He was the beloved husband for 60 years of Rita F. (Falletti) Cloherty.
Born in Arlington, MA, he was the son of the late John M. and Annie B. (Hughes) Cloherty. He was raised and educated in Arlington and was a graduate of Arlington High School.
He attended Boston State Teachers College, now UMass Boston, and earned his degree in education and also served in the U.S. Army. He taught briefly in Salisbury before spending 30+ years teaching English at Burlington High School. While there, he coached baseball and basketball. He also refereed soccer at the high school and college levels.
He so enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren in their athletic and academic achievement.
A consummate athlete, he competed in the Boston Marathon and tried out as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. In his spare time, John enjoyed golfing with the Winchester Seniors Tour and bowling. He was an avid reader and loved music from the 50s-70s, as well as current stars like Andrea Bocelli and Diana Krall. He could also be found birding, doing crossword puzzles and spending time with family and friends by the ocean.
In addition to his wife, Rita, John is lovingly survived by his children: Sean E. Cloherty and his wife Judy, of Sharon, Dr. Maria-Elena Cloherty of Stow and Mark J. Cloherty and his wife Dr. Stephanie LaMass of Silver Spring, MD. He was the devoted grandfather of Ryan and Jason Cloherty, Isabelle and Olivia Edmond, the dear brother of the late Mary Perry, Anna Mikutaitis, Margaret “Peggy” Towey, Michael Joseph and Robert Cloherty. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather for a Visitation at Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester, on Monday, November 25 from 9:30-10:30AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Eulalia’s Church, 50 Ridge St., Winchester, at 11:00AM. Burial will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester.
