Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Brian McCarthy, Andover, MA, announce his passing after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Brian grew up in Malden, MA, son of John and Marion McCarthy and brother to Paula Chunias and husband Ted, J. Kevin McCarthy and wife Patricia, and Gayle Corning and husband Jim. He was a loving uncle to several nieces and nephews.

Brian followed in his father’s footsteps as an accomplished student and athlete and was inducted to the Malden Catholic Hall of Fame. During his time at Malden Catholic, he was recruited by several prominent colleges to play football and track and went on to attend Northeastern University where he majored in Engineering. During his time at Northeastern he met his love and wife of 53 years, Karen, a native of Brookline.

Brian and Karen went on to have two sons, Kevin of Hampstead, NH and Jeffrey of Winchester, MA and raised their family living in Indiana, Connecticut and finally returning to Massachusetts. Brian always supported his family by dedicating his time to coaching basketball, little league and cub scouts. He was blessed to gain two daughters through his sons who he loved and protected like his own, Dianne Schwarz McCarthy and Jennifer Connolly McCarthy.
Brian had a successful career with a focus on civil and environmental engineering and impacted so many through his work, developing friendships that remain. He loved to tell stories of his travels, his work, and all his experiences, constantly bringing laughter to anyone he interacted with.

Brian leaves behind a strong legacy through his five grandchildren: John, Mary, Matthew, Jack and Michael McCarthy. He loved his grandchildren and proudly commended them through their interests, attending countless games, plays, dance recitals and cheer competitions. His happiest moments were family gatherings at the pool or the beach playing corn hole, watching movies, hosting grandchildren’s sleepovers and sponsoring numerous family vacations for his growing family.

Brian was known for his humorous personality and was a humble man who tried to distill humility and the acceptance and kind treatment of others. Those who knew him will tell stories of times that he went out of his way to help them and let them know they were loved, and those memories will last forever.

We will remember Brian at a funeral Mass held on November 11th, 2024 at 11am at St. Augustine’s Parish at 43 Essex St. Andover, MA. The McCarthy’s would be honored if family and friends joined them at a “Celebration of Life” to share stories, smiles and memories about Brian immediately following the service at The Autograph American Tavern, 89 Main Street Courtyard, Andover, MA.

In lieu of flowers, Brian had appreciation for two organizations: Malden Catholic High School, c/o Advancement Office, 99 Crystal St. Malden, MA 02148 and Mary Immaculate Health / Care Services 172 Lawrence St, Lawrence, MA 01841. Interment at West Parish Cemetery, Andover, MA will be private and held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home of Andover.
