Harriet Holmes Herring, 99, of Tifton passed away Friday, November 1, 2024, at her home. Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 4, 2024, at Tifton’s First Methodist Church with the Rev. Chip Grantham and the Rev. Jay Roberson officiating. The family will receive friends in the Sanctuary of Tifton’s First Methodist Church on Monday, November 4, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of the service. Mrs. Herring will be laid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery in a private family graveside service.
Mrs. Herring’s family members will serve as pallbearers.
Born June 7, 1925, in Tift County, Mrs. Herring was the daughter of the late Charlton B. Holmes and Pearl Dickert Holmes, who were pioneer residents of Tifton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Neal “Jake” Herring, Jr.; two brothers; and two sisters. She was a homemaker; and she was an active member of Tifton’s First Methodist Church, where she served on the Administrative Board and the Council of Ministries for a number of years, serving as President, Treasurer, Circle Chairman and Bible leader of Methodist Women. She taught the Christian Covenant Sunday School class for 20 years and served as President and Treasurer of Club 55.
She was a member of the Tifton Junior Woman’s Club and the District Board of the Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs; the Tifton Twentieth Century Library Club; the Tift General Hospital Pink Ladies Auxiliary and the Camellia Garden Club.
Mrs. Herring graduated from Tifton High School and from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology.
Mrs. Herring enjoyed China painting, needlepoint, playing bridge, and entertaining. She was a world traveler and visited six of the seven continents.
She deeply loved her family and is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Judy Herring of Tifton and Neal and Kally Herring of Hawthorne, Florida; one daughter and son-in-law, Pearl and John Cox of Franklin, Tennessee; seven grandchildren, Gerald Neal Herring IV, Katherine Herring Solis, Lucy Cox Miller, Joseph M. Herring, Betsy Cox Moran, Sarah Jean Herring and Kellis James Herring; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff and caregivers of Abide Home Care, especially Michelle Thornton, Kathy Lawhorn, Tiffany Gordon and Destiny McRae; and the staff and caregivers of Hospice of Tift Area for their loving care of Mrs. Herring.
