HOLLIS- Alton “Whitey” H. Meserve, age 80, passed away at his home in Hollis surrounded by his
loving family on October 31, 2024.
He was born in Hollis on April 1, 1944, a son of the late Chester and Eletha (Harmon) Meserve.
After graduating from high school, Whitey proudly served our country in the National Guard and went on to begin his long career in fire service. He moved up through the ranks at the Saco Fire Department, beginning as a junior firefighter and then as a call member. He was promoted to
Deputy Fire Chief, and then proudly held the position of Fire Chief until retirement. He also served as the animal control officer in Hollis for many years, as well as worked for Pleasant Hill Excavators.
Whitey recently celebrated 60 years of marriage to his beloved wife, Mona (Ouellette) Meserve. They enjoyed traveling the country and visiting many casinos along the way. Their most recent adventure took them to Alaska, where they walked across glaciers, fished next to a bear and enjoyed each other’s company.
Although he had been retired for many years, he was always busy either hunting, fishing, trapping, gardening, or helping members of the community. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed sharing skills and knowledge with his sons and those lucky enough to be in his hunting group.
The love for his grandkids ran deep. He attended numerous dance recitals, baseball games, and soccer games. You could often find him showing off his Scot Pride at weekly Bonny Eagle football and basketball games as a loyal fan.
He is predeceased by nine siblings- Howard “Huggy” Meserve, Lawrence “Bill” Meserve, John Meserve, Clarence “Bud” Meserve, Evelyn “Pink” Meserve, Melba Ackley, Ruth Harmon, Judy Emmons, and Helen Goodrow.
Whitey is survived by his beloved wife- Mona Meserve; children- Michael Meserve and his wife Diane, and Brian Meserve and his wife Hope; grandchildren- Michael Meserve Jr., Krista Meserve and her fiancé TJ Delano, and Zachariah Meserve; and siblings – June Emmons and Charlene Patch.
Visitation will be held on Saturday Nov. 9th from 1 - 2 PM at the Hollis Center Church, 388 Hollis Road, Hollis. A memorial service with firefighter honors will follow at 2 PM at the church, with burial to follow at Bear Hill Cemetery in Hollis.
