Obituary




Lucy Garcia, 96, of Worcester died Tuesday, October 29th in UMASS Memorial Medical Center – University Campus. Her husband of 71 years, Russell C. Garcia, Sr. died in 2018. She leaves two sons, Russel C. Garcia, Jr. and his wife, Donna, Richard J. Garcia and his wife, Carol all of Worcester; a daughter, Patricia A. LaChance of South Yarmouth; two sisters, Laura Portosa and Gloria Bisceglia both of Worcester; five grandchildren, Kara Hendrickx, Patrick Lachance, Dustin Garcia, Matthew Garcia and Jessica Garcia; five great grandchildren, Connor, William and Hannah Lachance and Finn and Rory Hendrickx; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Benjamin; and a sister, Rosemarie.
She was born in Worcester, the daughter of Patsy and Josephine (Abatantuono) Valerio. Lucy was a cherished long-time member of Our Lady of the Angels Church. Her unwavering faith as a devout Catholic guided her life, and she was a valued presence within her church community. For many years, Lucy worked as a skilled stitcher at a local manufacturing company, where her dedication and craftsmanship were admired by her colleagues.
Lucy’s warmth and kindness shone through in everything she did. She loved to sew, creating beautiful pieces for her family and friends. Spending time with her sisters was a joy, and she especially looked forward to their lunches together at JJ's in Westborough. She also cherished her neighborhood friends, with whom she shared many joyful evenings playing Michigan rummy each month.
Lucy’s love for cooking filled her home with delicious meals, and summers at Hampton Beach were among her fondest memories, surrounded by the people she loved. Above all, she found endless joy in her grandchildren, whose visits were a highlight of her life. Known for her sweet, supportive, and caring nature, Lucy’s legacy of faith, love, and friendship will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed.
Her family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at 7 East at UMass Memorial Medical Center, University Campus, for their support, compassion, and care during Lucy's final days.
Calling hours are Wednesday, November 6th from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. in O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, Worcester. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Epilepsy Foundation of New England, 175 Cabot Street, Suite 301, Lowell, Massachusetts 01854.
