March 7, 1946 – October 26, 2024
Helen McNicholas, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and dedicated friend, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2024, at the age of 78. Born on March 7, 1946, in Winthrop, Massachusetts, to Mary and Joseph McNicholas, Helen was the oldest of five children. She dedicated her life to family, community, and education, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Helen spent much of her life in Vermont, where she raised her children and taught generations of students with unwavering dedication. Later in life, she returned to the Boston area, continuing her teaching career in both private and public schools. Helen’s classrooms were places of warmth and inspiration, where her gentle spirit, kind smile, and patience transformed her role into that of a mentor, friend, and beloved teacher.
A woman of deep conviction, Helen never shied away from standing up for what she believed. Her faith guided her throughout her life, providing her with strength, compassion, and a steadfast sense of purpose. Among her many interests, Helen was an avid cyclist, finding joy in numerous biking trips, both with friends and on her own, where she explored new places.
She was the devoted mother of Michael Walker and his wife, Kimberly, and Chris Walker and his wife, Jen. She was also a cherished grandmother, known as “Grandma Henny,” to Paige and Noah, who filled her life with immense joy. Helen is also survived by her sisters, Eileen Keough and her children; Joanne Longacre and her husband, Jim; Gerry Lynch and her husband, Jeff; and her brother, Joe McNicholas and his wife, Mary. Her kindness, generosity, and friendship will be deeply missed by her extended family and friends.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to everyone at the Newbridge on the Charles Assisted Living Facility in Dedham, Massachusetts. They will be forever thankful for the kindness and dedication to Helen’s care and comfort in the face of a debilitating disease.
Helen’s legacy of love, compassion, and commitment to learning, friendship, and adventure will continue to live in the hearts of her loved ones and in the countless lives she touched. She will be remembered not only for her accomplishments but for the love she gave so freely to those around her.
A celebration of Helen’s life will take place in late spring 2025. In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen’s memory may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA). 912 Killian Hill Road S.W., Lilburn, GA 30047 or www.lbda.org www.lbda.org
