Obituary

Mary L. (Brewster) Wessa, age 95, formerly of Brockton for over 80 years, died peacefully in her sleep on October 19, 2024 at Pilgrim Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Peabody, MA. Mary was the loving wife for 69 years of the late Robert L. Wessa, Sr., her childhood and lifelong sweetheart. Born in Dearborn, MI, she was the daughter of the late Thomas A. and Mildred F. (Conner) Brewster and the niece of her loving aunt Catherine (Brewster) Maguire.

Mary was raised in Brockton and Garden City, MI. She attended St. Patrick’s School in Brockton, Sacred Heart School in Garden City, MI, and Comptometer’s School in Dearborn, MI.

Mary worked for General Motors in Detroit, MI, for New England Telephone in Brockton and for Goddard Anesthesia Services in Brockton for over 20 years until retiring in her 60’s.

Mary was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was kind and patient and had an inner strength and beauty. She offered encouragement and support to her family and friends. Mary always offered a calming presence and was loved by all who knew her.

Mary enjoyed music and as a young woman, she played the pipe organ at St. Raphael’s in Garden City, MI. She continued to play the piano throughout her life, filling the house with beautiful music. Mary also enjoyed reading, Scrabble and crossword puzzles. Mary and her husband Bob were accomplished dancers. She also enjoyed traveling, camping, the beach and Friday night dinners with her husband and friends. Mary was a member of the VFW Whitman Women’s Auxiliary, the Viking Club in Braintree and the Brockton YWCA. She was a Valkyrian Member of the Vega Club, and played in the Vega Club and Westgate Lanes bowling leagues.

Mary is survived by her three children: Eleanor Wessa of Abington, Robert Wessa, Jr. of Marblehead and Sandra Veidenheimer and her husband Richard of Needham. She was the grandmother of Tara and Jason Veidenheimer. Mary was the sister of the late Catherine Brewster-Ealy and the aunt of Terri Franz, James Gannon and John Wilden. She was the sister of the late Elizabeth Schleicher (Mrs. Gerald Schleicher) and aunt of Denise Linn, the late Jerry Schleicher and Ryan Schleicher. She was the sister-in-law of Nelma Carey (Mrs. John E. Carey) and aunt of Janel Donlan, Susan Gannon and the late Carol Carey.

Visitation will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton, on Monday October 28, from 4-7pm. The funeral procession will gather at the funeral home on Tuesday at 9:30am for a Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 433 West Street, Brockton at 10:30am. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
