Roy A. Wentzell, 87

Dateline: Mansfield, MA

Roy A. Wentzell, 87, a former longtime resident of Mansfield passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Friday, October 18, 2024, at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. He was the beloved husband of the late Thelma A. Wentzell (Walker), to whom he was wed for 51 years at the time of her death on July 29, 2010.

Born in Holliston, MA on July 16, 1937, he was the son of the late Frances (Messom) Wentzell Poudrier and the late Arthur Wentzell. He was the beloved stepson of the late Leo Poudrier.

Roy grew up in Norton, was educated in Norton public schools, was a 1955 graduate of Norton High School and later attended the Massachusetts Trades Shops School in Boston. Roy proudly served in the US Army as an MP.

Prior to retiring, Roy had been employed as a Tool Designer, starting a 23-year career at Valentine Tool in Norton and finishing his career at Arkles Corporation in Stoughton.

Family was the most important part of Roy and Thelma’s lives; they often spent time camping in Maine and travelling throughout the United States. Roy and his wife were the co-owners of the Ayer Sports Card Center in downtown Ayer until Thelma’s death.

In addition to his work life and family life, Roy was a dedicated coach in the Mansfield Little League. He loved baseball and he loved teaching it. He coached the Yankees for 23 years, coaching his four sons and three nephews.

An avid New England Patriots and New York Yankees fan, Roy cherished the times spent in the presence of his family, especially with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his devoted children Stephen C. Wentzell and his longtime girlfriend Gloria of Ayer, John A. Wentzell and his wife Cathy of Cumberland, RI, Daniel R. Wentzell of Taunton, Eric J. Wentzell and his partner Jason of Mansfield, MA, and his son-in-law Herb Prew of North Attleboro, MA. He is also survived by his brother in-law George Walker of Mansfield, in addition to his adoring grandchildren Mark Prew and his wife Kelsey, Michael Prew, Matthew Wentzell and his wife Meghan, Nicholas Wentzell, Ryan Wentzell and his fiancé Hailey, and Kendra (Wentzell) Morawski and her husband Derek, and also his great grandchildren Carly Prew and Rowan Wentzell, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his wife Thelma and his daughter Linda M. Prew, his brother Arthur “Buddy” Wentzell, his sisters Arlene Lincoln and Helen Wain.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Wednesday, October 23rd from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main Street, Mansfield.

His funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 24th at 11:00 A.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Spring Brook Cemetery in Mansfield.
