Laura Elise Powell, age 71, passed away on September 26, 2024, in Manhattan, NY. Born on February 6, 1953, in Jamaica, Queens, Laura grew up in Elwood, NY, where she graduated from John Glenn High School. She later attended Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, OH.
Laura excelled in a diverse range of professions, from bartender to floor trader at the NYSE, and finally as a printer at G&F Marketing in Farmingville.
Laura was a devoted wife and mother. She married the love of her life, Charles Powell, on July 19, 1985. They built cherished memories in their Brooklyn brownstone and started their family there with the birth of their daughter, Caitlin. The family later moved to Lake Ronkonkoma on Long Island, where they welcomed their son Ian into the world and completed their family.
Laura uplifted her husband and children with her boundless generosity and unconditional love. Thanks to her unwavering support, Charles, Caitlin, and Ian were able to pursue their passions for science and became accomplished scientists and engineers.
Laura's love and generosity extended to her granddaughter, Ruby. She treasured every moment spent with her grandchild and eagerly anticipated each visit.
Laura was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Gustave Edgar and Ida Adienne Mortensen; her sister, Ida Adienne Shoverling; and her husband, Charles William Powell. She is survived and lovingly remembered by her daughter, Caitlin Alison Powell; her son, Ian Wesley Powell; and her granddaughter, Ruby James Powell.
A memorial service will be held at Faith Lutheran Brethren Church in Briarcliff Manor on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Laura's memory may be made to the Arbor Day Foundation or Heifer International, organizations that were dear to her heart.
