Dr. James Paul Rouintree
September 24, 1933-October 10, 2024
Dr. James Paul Rouintree, age 91 of Anderson, IN died October 10, 2024.
Dr. Rouintree was born in West Plains, MO to parents Aubrey and Helene Rouintree. After graduating from Drury College in Springfield, MO, he played trombone in the Army Band for 3 years, abdicating an opportunity to tour Europe with the band in order to pursue his real passion - teaching. He began in Mountain View, MO with elementary to high school kids and moved to Champaign, IL both to serve as band director for Jr & Sr high school students and to pursue graduate degrees at the University of Illinois.
In 1969, he moved to Anderson, IN to become Professor of Music to establish the Wind Ensemble group for Anderson College. He spent the rest of his career molding a group of 35 quickly-gathered band members and ending with a stellar group of musicians performing at Carnegie Hall in May 1998 for his final concert as conductor of the Wind Ensemble.
He was preceded in death by his much younger brother David Rouintree, sister Beverly Withrow, and Patricia Rouintree, his adored wife of 56 years.
He is survived by his brother, John Rouintree, sons, Kevin (wife Tanja) and Darrin (wife Holly), grandchildren, Beth, Patrick, and Jessie along with his nieces, nephews, 5 great-granddaughters and cousin, Ethel Willard.
Visitation will be held at Rozelle Johnson Funeral Service, on Monday Oct 14, 2024 from 4pm - 6pm with a service following at 6pm. Private family burial will take place at East Maplewood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to the David Rouintree Scholarship Fund at Anderson University.
