The beloved Yuen O. Chin of Charlestown, formerly of Guangzhou, China, passed away peacefully on Oct 7, 2024 at the age of 99.5 years old (102 per customary Chinese practice). She will be reunited with her late husband Zhen Shan Fu. She is survived by son Bai C. Fu; daughter & her husband Corinna and Jeff Mossberg; grandchildren Celia, Tricia & her husband Qing, Mark, Kirsten, Max, and Brian (honorary); great grandchildren Kyan and Khloe; and many extended family in the US, Canada and China.
Her nearly century-long life had witnessed the tumultuous events of the 20th century, especially in China. She endured extreme hardship in her early years, sought a path out of poverty through education, and successfully became a banking professional in China. She later immigrated to the US to be reunited with her family and to give her children a better future. As a non-English speaking immigrant, she transitioned with humility and positivity from a banking professional in China to a manual laborer in the US. With grit and determination, she overcame many obstacles to provide a stable new home for her daughter to thrive and blossom in this new country. She was talented in many ways: a self-taught seamstress, a Chinese poet, a fruitful gardener, and a resourceful craftsman - building a card table from spare floor planks and constructing garden scaffolding from tree branches. Even into her late 70s/80s, she tenaciously hauled branches from a nearby ravine and sawed them into uniform lengths for firewood. She truly embodied a "can do" spirit in all her endeavors.
She was the loving matriarch of our family and will always be remembered as kind, gentle, intelligent, hardworking, resourceful, and selfless. We will miss her dearly.
