James M. “Uncle Jim” Griffin, Jr., 87, of Mashpee formerly of Worcester and Charlton died Wednesday, October 9th peacefully at home after a brief illness. He leaves his nieces and nephews, Patricia Dyer with whom he lived, Ann Benoit of Worcester, Elizabeth Dyer and her husband, Robert Hokanson of Worcester, Kathleen Griffin of Arlington, Sheila Griffin of Osterville, Joseph Griffin and his wife, Charlene of Holden, James Griffin of Worcester; and great nieces and nephews, Gia Cataldo, Robert Hokanson, and Ethan Dyer. He was predeceased by three sisters, Mary, Elizabeth, and Jo-Ann; a niece, Maureen Griffin; and a great nephew, Matthew Dyer.
He was born in Worcester, the son of James M. Griffin, Sr. and Lillian M. (O’Connell) Griffin. Jim graduated from St. Peter’s High School in 1956 and went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Marine Corps, stationed in Camp Lejeune and Okinawa.
For 35 years, Jim worked as a lineman for the telephone company. He enjoyed a life filled with hobbies such as boating, cheering for the Holy Cross football team and Boston sports teams.
Jim, known fondly as “Uncle Jim” to many leaves behind a legacy of service, love and friendship. His warmth, kindness, and adventurous spirit touched many lives. He will be greatly missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
His visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 16th from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. in O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, Worcester followed by his funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. in St. Peter Church, 931 Main Street, Worcester. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, 260 Cambridge Street, Worcester.
