Roy Eugene Haggard, a cherished physician and fixture of the Ventura community, passed away on October 2, 2024, at the age of 98. Born in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, Roy was the second of two children and moved to Ventura at just one year old. He spent his formative years in this community, graduating from Ventura High School in 1944.
After being discharged from the Army, Roy returned home to pursue his education. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, and later earned his medical degree from the University of Southern California, graduating in 1954. After finishing his residency at Ventura County Hospital, he established his private medical practice in Ventura in 1957, where he dedicated over three decades to the health and well-being of his community.
Roy was well known as the physician for the Ventura High School football team, providing care and support to countless young athletes. He also served as the physician for the Ventura County Jail, where his compassion and commitment to service were deeply appreciated.
In 1949, Roy married the love of his life, Marian Weber. Together, they raised four children—Geoffrey, Gregory, Cynthia, and Janet—instilling in them a love for adventure, travel, and family. Roy’s passion for exploration led to cherished family vacations and trips around the world.
An avid outdoorsman, Roy enjoyed hiking, fishing, gardening, photography, and woodworking. He was also a recreational pilot and a proud member of the Aviation Country Club of California, where he served as treasurer. Additionally, he and Marian were longtime members of the LCN Dance Club, sharing their love for dance and community.
Roy was predeceased by his beloved wife Marian in 2001 and his partner of 14 years Barbara Culbertson in 2022. He is survived by his four children, 13 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward his legacy of kindness, service, and love.
Roy Haggard’s unwavering dedication to his patients and his community, along with his zest for life, will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26th at 11:00 a.m. at the Boyko and Reardon Telegraph Road Mortuary, 15 Teloma Dr., Ventura. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society @ donate.cancer.org.
