Obituary

Wilma Jean (Jeanie) York,89, went to be with Jesus on September 26, 2024 after a brief illness.

She was born on March 19, 1935 to Dellis and Mary Smith. Jeanie graduated Valedictorian of Anderson High School in 1953. She then married her high school sweetheart, Norman York on January 10, 1955.

Jeanie was very active in her life and played softball well into her later years, often refereeing basketball, volleyball, and umpiring softball and baseball games. She passed this love of sports to her children and grandchildren. Jeanie also spent many years subbing at Daleville High School, and loved teaching in the art room when they needed her.

Her favorite place to be was out in her garden, and she created a haven for animals just outside her back door. You could always count on finding her tending to her favorite flowers and weeding her garden. Any animal could find refuge at her home. She often took in stray cats that wandered onto her property, and instantly made them a part of her family.

She loved to read and shared her love of books with her grandchildren, often giving them books and encouraging them to read with her. Jeanie truly loved her grandchildren and loved her visits with each of them.

Jeanie was preceded in death by: husband, Norman York, daughters Mary Kay York and Suzi York Williams, son, Joel Norman York, and grandson Jeffrey Scott Roberts.

She is survived by her sons Mark (Leanne) York, and Mike York, daughter Amy (Tom) Roberts, grandchildren Krystal (Roger) Desrosiers, Lucas Williams, Lindsay York, Andy (Beth) Roberts, Craig (Alyssa) Roberts, Chelsea (Bobbie Sue) York, Mary Kaye York, Jaime (Caleb) Ferguson, Kayliegh (Jacob) Shannon, and great-grandchildren Lilly Comer, Jack Comer, Jeffrey Roberts, and Lucia Roberts.

Throughout her life, Jeanie’s son, Mike took special care of her. Towards the end of her time on earth, Mike and her great granddaughter, Lilly cared for Jeanie. We are incredibly grateful for their love and intentional care for her.

Jeanie loved others deeply and will be forever missed by her friends and family.

Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service with Chris Bell officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Wednesday from 11:00am -1:00pm at the funeral home.

Donations in Jeanie’s memory may be made to the Animal Protection League or the Jeff Roberts Memorial Scholarship Fund.
