Obituary

John Dwight “Doodle” Barrett, 84, of Tifton passed away Sunday, September 29, 2024, at Doctor’s Hospital in Augusta. A graveside funeral service will be held for Mr. Barrett at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at Oak Ridge Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest. The Rev. Ronnie Lawson will officiate. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.

Born November 29, 1939, in Sparks, Mr. Barrett was the son of the late John Emmett Barrett and Eula Lee Walker Barrett. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Bonnie Turner Barrett; one son, Darrick Barrett; three brothers, Dwain Barrett, Matha Barrett and Roger Barrett; and one sister, Linda Faye Barton. He started working at Safety Rite Foods in 1966 and purchased it in 1974. He continued to run the plant through the remaining years of his life. He enjoyed cutting meat and slaughtering along beside his son, Wade Barrett. John enjoyed fishing the Flats and the River with his sons. He loved all his children and grandchildren and spending time riding his Ranger and eating ice cream with them. He loved sleeping in his recliner with his two puppies that he loved dearly, Millie and Hammer.

Mr. Barrett is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Tonda and Kip Martin of Athens; three sons and daughters-in-law, Tahl and Sherry Barrett and Wade and Brandy Barrett, all of Tifton and Wyatt and Terry Barrett of Enigma; 19 grandchildren and their spouses, Jessica and Mark Allen, Dana and Joe Payne, Kristy Barrett, Gage and Courtney Barrett, Amber Anderson, Ashley and Hunter Snow, Austin and Keyleigh Cooper, Haley Cooper, Abby and Serbando Jaimes, Emily Valdez, Corey and Maleah Barrett, Brian Barrett, Emily Regan Barrett, John and Marsha Redmon, Bo Redmon, Billy Redmon, Trina Harris, Blaine and Kayla Spradley and Tasha Spradley; 28 great-grandchildren; his siblings and their spouses, Pug and Net Barrett, CW Barrett, Annie Reese Davis and Wayne Barrett; and many nieces and nephews.
