Rothard V. “Rocky” Gromley, 88, of Cherry Tree, PA passed away on Friday, September 27, 2024 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
The son of Cecil G. and Ruth L. (Stiffler) Gromley, he was born on September 10, 1936 in East Run, PA.
He proudly served in the US Army.
On September 23, 1961 he married the former Charlotte F. Henry and they shared over
fifty-four years of marriage together.
Rocky worked in various local deep coal mines for thirty-four years. Later in his retirement, Rocky was employed as a bus driver for the Purchase Line School District until 2015.
He will be remembered for his hard-working disposition. A man who greatly enjoyed being outdoors, he could typically be found hunting, fishing and working in his vegetable garden.
Rocky, known fondly as a “Gentle Giant,” thoroughly loved his kids, grandkids and great grandkids and delighted in spending time with them.
Rocky is survived by his four children: Jeffrey Wade Gromley and wife MaryAnn of Troy, MT; Eric V. Gromley and wife Melissa of Home, PA; Karen L. Bugay and husband Robert of Commodore, PA and Curtis J. Gromley and wife Christine of Centreville, MD; his eleven grandchildren: Ashley, Tyler, Matthew and Jacob Gromley; Kiersten Verbos and husband Tim;, Bryce Gromley and wife Hailey; Samantha Bugay; Terri Bugay and Connor, Colton and Catrina Gromley; his three great-grandchildren: Addison and Blair Verbos and Quinten Bugay.
Also surviving are his brother, Richard Gromley and wife Joyce of Commodore, PA and numerous nieces, nephews; great nieces and great nephews.
Rocky was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on April 22, 2016; his son: Ronald E. Gromley on November 6, 2007 and his six brothers and five sisters.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, October 3, 2024 from 2-4:00 p.m. and 6-8:00 p.m. at the Rairigh Funeral Home, Ltd. in Hillsdale, PA, where a 10:00 a.m. funeral will take place on Friday, October 4, 2024 with Pastor Calvin Duvall officiating. Military honors will be observed by the Glen Campbell American Legion. Interment will take place at the Thompson Cemetery in Hillsdale, PA.
