Obituary

HIRAM – Lucille I Harmon of Hiram, age 94 passed away September 23rd at her home with her three daughters by her side. Lucille (Lou) was born Feb. 6, 1930, to parents Archie O. Walker and Rhoda L. (Day) Walker.
She attended local schools and in July 1948 married her beloved husband of 66 years, Robert H. Harmon. They began their lives together in Parsonsfield where they worked, lived and loved for many years.
Lucille was a homemaker and raised her daughters in a little house in rural Parsonsfield. Robert built the house himself. She learned how to prepare the various wild game that her husband would bring home. During November hunting seasons she would cook for a big gathering of hunters and cousins who came to visit and hunt. Wonderful memories were made in that humble home. She was a great cook and made delicious apple pies, baked beans and biscuits, and a passed down family favorite recipe of old-fashioned molasses chocolate chip cookies. She loved family get togethers and holidays surrounded by her family.
Lucille worked picking apples when her girls were in school and also at the Cornish Cold Storage packing apples. She later worked at the Fryeburg Shoe Shop for many years and retired from there. Her main dedication, however, was as a wife, mother, and homemaker.
She loved to crochet, cook, garden, and just “putter” on things. When her parents both passed away, Bob and Lucille began fixing up and reconstructing her parents farm in Hiram. They eventually decided to move there and sold their little house in Parsonsfield. It is there in Hiram that they lived out their lives enjoying the property, the area and working around the home they loved. They were happy, content, and they were together.
Lucille was a member of Calvary Bible Church and before her fall and decline in health, she could be found there every Sunday. She was involved over the years in the “Meals Ministry” and she had her own “Give Hugs Ministry” that she created. She was known for her hugs everywhere.
She was active and very independent up until recent months when her health didn’t allow. At 93 she was weed whacking, raking, cooking, painting, driving, living alone and tending her wood stove. She was a hard worker. She loved her chickens and her cat and they loved her.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert (Bob) Harmon whom she missed every day, her parents Archie and Rhoda Walker, her two brothers Irvin and Norman Walker.
Lucille is survived by her three daughters, Diane L. Harvey of Parsonsfield, Donna Ahern and her husband Dan of Porter, Debra Bettencourt and husband Jeff of Cornish. Also two sisters, Cheryl Weed and her husband Perley of Kentucky, and Shirley Dewitt and companion Tim Caldwell of Hiram. She was blessed with seven grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.
She was truly blessed by God with a long, full life and with people who loved her. She was a wonderful mom and grandma and a loving wife to her husband. She will be greatly missed until we see her again in Heaven to get our hugs.
A funeral service to celebrate and honor Lucille will be held on Thursday October 3 at 1:00 at Calvary Bible Church, South Hiram Road, South Hiram. Burial will follow at the Kezar Falls Burial Ground.
