Obituary

Standish – Gene Lawerence Miner, age 83, passed away on September 25, 2024, at his home from cancer.
He was born in Newport, VT on January 28, 1941, to the late Donald Miner Sr and Della Mae (Kenfield) Miner. He was the 10th of 16 children born to them. He loved being part of a large family and often joked that he could get 10 of his brothers or sisters mad at him and still play with the other 6.
Gene married his high school sweetheart and love of his life Beverley Robbins on August 5, 1961. They met at the Wagon Wheel Ranch in Steep Falls while roller-skating and fell in love. After their first date he told his friend “I’m going to marry that woman” and he did. They were happily married for 63 years and were an example to everyone who ever met them on what marriage should be.
For 40 years Gene was employed by Shaw’s Supermarkets as the manager of the Meat Department. He retired at age 60 and enjoyed a long fun-filled retirement.
Gene enjoyed many things including NASCAR. One time in the Pocono’s while attending a NASCAR event after the race he decided it was a good idea to drive his camper around the track as fast as he could. It wasn’t a good idea and his wife let him know about it. Football. The Patriots were his favorite team although he would watch any game including college ball. Snowmobiling. He always enjoyed weekend rides as long as family was involved. He loved riding his Harley Davidson with his wife on many road trips including to Vermont and Lake George NY to name a few. Camping. He had a few campers in his life and loved taking his grandkids on camping weekends. He and Beverley always camped at Fryeburg Fair for the week to enjoy the harness racing. Brook fishing. He took his children brook fishing regularly but always liked to catch the biggest fish. Harness racing. He would play the numbers 1 and 4 every race because #14 was his basketball jersey number in high school. Gambling. He enjoyed the casino’s with his wife and most often could be found playing the poker machines waiting for the royal straight flush which he did win one time. He enjoyed trips to Las Vegas with his wife after their retirement and talked about it often. Watching old westerns on TV. He enjoyed working with his hands around his own house and helping others with any projects they had. He loved working with his son Rusty to help him restore and beautify 2 antique houses. He was always the first to volunteer to help anybody with anything. He would give you the shirt off his back as long as you didn’t mind it having a spot of grease or a bit of dirt on it from working on so many projects. He helped build the house he and Beverley lived in for 54 years, including converting a garage into a living room. He was always the life of the party. People enjoyed being around him because you never knew what he was going to say and always had a quick one-liner on hand to make people laugh.
He is predeceased by sisters Glenna Boothby, Shirley Erickson, Charlotte Stevens, Sandra Foster and Margaret “Peggy” Miner. He is also predeceased by his brothers Newburn “Bud” Miner, William “Bill” Miner and Donald Miner Jr.
Gene is survived by his wife Beverley Miner, daughter Laura Hebert and her husband Chris, son Rusty Miner and his wife Lotte. His grandchildren Heather Ahern and her husband Sean, Shaun Harlow and Megan Southard, Dillon Miner and wife Kendra, Dustin Miner, great grandsons Zachary Nielson-Ashby and Jackson Harlow with one great grandchild due next year. He is also survived by his sisters Beverly Hathaway, Ruth Cox, Marilyn Wood and Joan Brown. His brothers Malcolm Miner, Ronald Miner and Fred Miner.
A funeral service will be held on Friday October 11th at 1 PM at the Poitras, Neal & York Funeral Home, 71 Maple St., Cornish, followed by a celebration of life at the Standish Town Hall located on Route 35.
Because of his love of children, Gene would enjoy if in lieu of flowers contributions were made to the Bruce Roberts Toy Fund, C/O Portland Press Herald, 295 Gannet Dr, S Portland ME 04106.
