Sheila Marder, of North Easton, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 20 after a brief illness. She was 81.
Sheila was born in Cambridge to the late Lewis Marder and Sally (Lerner) Marder. She was raised in Spencer and spent summers on Revere Beach. She attended Salem State College and worked briefly as a 4th grade teacher before raising her children. She returned to work years later, first as an Emergency Medical Technician and then managing a small retail photo lab, The Developing Tank.
Sheila was predeceased by her brother Robert Marder and her long time partner and love of her life, John Bender. She leaves her son Ned Rothstein and his wife Jennifer Weis-Rothstein of Medfield, her son Lee Rothstein and his wife Andrea Balsamo, also of Medfield, and her daughter Kim Howard of Hanover, as well as her fur babies Charm, Tessa and Daffy. She was the beloved Nana Banana of Val, Madeline, Sadie and Dylan. Sheila also leaves a circle of life-long friends whom she considered family.
Sheila loved music and art and a good murder mystery. She could usually tell you whodunnit long before Hercule Poirot or Columbo or even Jessica Fletcher. She scheduled dinner time around Jeopardy and even in her final days, when she couldn’t remember much of anything, she could tell you that the flagon with the dragon had the brew that was true.
Sheila was an avid knitter and her handmade scarves and afghans will be keeping her loved ones warm for years to come.
Sheila will be remembered for her quick wit, her twinkling blue eyes and a home full of a variety of curious and unique collections, but most of all she will be remembered for giving quite possibly the world’s greatest hugs.
A celebration of her life is being planned for October.
