Sally Bedford Schofield, 76, of Westport, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully early on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Newbridge on the Charles in Dedham, Massachusetts. She was born on April 12, 1948, in Boston, Massachusetts, to the late Norman C. Bedford and Hilda L. Bedford. She was raised in the town of Hingham, Massachusetts, and was a graduate of Hingham High School and Boston University.
Mrs. Schofield devoted her life to her two children. She valued education and athletic achievement, and she gave her children every opportunity to achieve their highest potentials. When she discovered that they loved skiing, she devoted long hours, on countless winter weekends, driving them to Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, and later relocated to Waterville and then Waitsfield, Vermont, to allow them to pursue their alpine ski racing dreams.
But Mrs. Schofield always returned to her beloved home, gardens, longtime friends, and the beach in the “harbor” in Westport. In nearby Fall River, she enjoyed time working as a florist and much later as a volunteer in the gift shop at Charlton Memorial Hospital. She also loved dogs, which she bred at one point. She was a meticulous gardener and had a brilliant mind for beautiful things, especially flowers, plants, and birds. She taught herself to needlepoint and created a legacy of vibrant canvases shared with her family. Above all else, however, she was “mom,” “mommy,” “grandma,” “gigi,” “cousin,” and “aunt,” and she will be missed deeply by her friends and family.
Mrs. Schofield is survived by her son, Seth G. Schofield and his wife Leena P. Mittal, M.D.; her daughter, Darah L. Schofield; her grandchildren, Kai. A. Schofield, Callan A. Schofield, and Soren B. Schofield; her brother, N. Clark Bedford and his wife Leslie; and other family in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Virginia, and Canada among other places.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at 28 Lakeside Avenue, Westport, Massachusetts. Visitation for family and friends will occur just prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the same location. Interment will follow at the Beech Grove Cemetery (947 Main Road, Westport, Massachusetts). And a reception for family and friends will be held at 1:00 pm at the Acoaxet Club (152 Howland Rd., Westport, Massachusetts).
In lieu of flowers, we request that any memorial contributions be made to the Massachusetts Audubon Society (donate), the Buzzards Bay Coalition (donate), or Doctors Without Borders (donate). Please specify: “Memorial Donation in Honor of Sally B. Schofield.”
