Obituary

Dr. Paul David Maugle (Ph.D) started his life’s adventure on the 20th Aug. 1950 at Backus Hospital in Norwich CT son to Ruth and David Maugle, now deceased. He was always driven to do more and seldom took no for an answer. After Paul graduated from Norwich Free Academy in 1968, he continued his education while working for another 24 years.
After completing his Bachelors at the University of West Florida he joined the Peace Corps and worked in Colombia, South America where he met his beautiful wife Betty Isabel Sierra. Shortly after their marriage, they started their life’s many adventures by heading to the west coast of Colombia where Paul discovered a new species of shrimp.
After leaving the Peace Corps his new job with Ralston Purina sent them to Panama, where Paul grew and exported shrimp for a several years.
Then, Paul and Betty returned to CT where he commuted to URI to complete his Masters degree in aquaculture.
After receiving his MS, Paul and Betty immediately went to Kagoshima Japan for 3-1/2 years to conduct the research needed for his dissertation for his Ph.D in food science and nutrition. He then returned to URI to complete his Post Doctorate in Analytic Chemistry & Vitamin Metabolism.
Upon completion of his Post Doctorate, he worked for Pfizer in the food science department specializing in vitamin C.
Then he formed his own company P.D.M & Associates, biotechnology and special feeds, innovative solutions for the aquaculture industry.
As director of Aquaculture, Paul led and developed the Mohegan Indians oyster farm from Jan 1999 - Jan 2003.
He returned to Pfizer’s to work as an Organic Chemistry Outsourcing Specialist in 2003.
Paul and Betty started Maugle Siera Vineyards in Ledyard CT in 2002, all this because two people like wine.
What a lovely journey these two have shared together over the years of their lives. How blessed they have been to have enjoyed the constant support and comfort of one another as they travelled life’s path together. So many fine adventures, exciting business endeavors, friends and families joined a loving home always on their own. All that they built and shared together for 50 plus years leaves everything inside of them and will be there always.
Paul was Betty’s best friend and rock. He helped her through everything in their married life. He made her laugh every step of the way. What she really misses most about Paul is that he always made everything better. She could feel like the world was crashing down around her, and he would say “It’s going to be OK.” He was the most wonderful man in the world, kind, hard working with a great work ethic, and generous. He would give the shirt off his back to anyone who needed it.
He is survived by Betty Maugle, his beloved wife of 50 years; his daughter Carmen Cecilia Vitola and two grandchildren Brenda Isabel Blanco Vitola, Diego David Blanco Vitola, and great granddaughter, Isabel Cristina Ramirez Blanco. He is also survived by brothers Kenneth B. Maugle PhD of Lady Lake FL, Mark A. Maugle of Groton, and sister Joan A. Frykenberg of Groton.
Paul passed away peacefully on September 8, 2024 with his wife beside him.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Paul at the Maugle Sierra Vineyard in Ledyard. Details will be announced in a later time.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Paul's name may be made to Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation https://www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org and will be appreciated.
