HIRAM- John “Jack” Philip Martus, age 76, passed away at home on Sept. 7th, 2024.
John was born in Cambridge, MA 2-24-1948. Raised by his adoring, doting, mother- Mary Booth. After being denied entrance to the Army multiple times, due to asthma, he persevered, and proved his abilities, and proudly served our country in Vietnam. He served from 1967-1969 in the 101st Airborne Division. Upon returning from war, he met his beloved wife Denise on a blind date. They married in 1971, and had three children, Christopher Martus, Amanda Drawdy, and Michelle Parkhurst. He owned and operated his own cleaning business out of Boston, named “Dirty Business”, before relocating to Maine, which was their lifelong dream. Once there, he was employed by the Maine State Turnpike for 18 years before retiring. John always had a smile on his face, a quick joke, and a coffee in hand. He got great enjoyment out of giving away “Dunkin’s” gift cards to random emergency responders and anyone else he felt “ needed” them. His absolute favorite pastime was fishing, especially with his grandson Dylan, always trying to catch the elusive “General”! Camping, fried clams, and spending time with his family made him the happiest. Some of his “famous” quotes were: “However, comma”; “It says here in fine print”; “Watch out for the leaves”; And, my Favorite, “Drive Safe”; Always.
He held great pride in his 6 grandsons, and 2 great grandchildren
