GORHAM- Nancy Ellen (Abbott) (Sewell) DiMatteo passed away on September 5, 2024, after a courageous battle with pulmonary disease (COPD) at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, she was 73 years old.
She was born in Salem, Massachusetts on September 16, 1951, the daughter of the late Calvin and Phyllis Abbott.
Nancy attending Catholic schools, graduated from High School and joined the workforce thereafter. While still in High School she met Paul Sewell who she then married and began her life as a devoted wife and homemaker. Nancy and Paul were blessed with two daughters who they loved deeply and worked hard to provide a good life for. Once her younger daughter was in school, Nancy obtained a part-time job as a Teacher’s Aide in the Amesbury School Department, which she truly loved. She made a deep connection with many of the students she worked with and remained in contact with them over the years.
Nancy loved all living things, a wildlife advocate and animal lover. She believed that nature should be left untouched. One of her favorite quotes was “We cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living creature”. She was a Vegan for many years, and she gave back to many organizations that supported her philosophy. She was a strong advocate for what she believed in and wasn’t afraid to speak her truth.
Her hobbies were many, she was a wonderful cook, and made the most beautiful Afghans through Crochet. She enjoyed photography, reading, making candles, painting and spending time in nature. Hiking was one of her favorites, along with camping which she spent many summers doing with her family in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Nancy had a keen sense for a good smelling lotion or potion and was a supporter of local businesses. Her love for good music and movies was also a large part of her life, notably she admired both John Lennon and Johnny Depp respectively. Alaska was on her bucket list, and she sadly didn’t make that journey, however her family plans to go one day in her honor.
Nancy is predeceased by her parents, maternal and paternal Grandparents, her first husband Paul Sewell as well as her second husband Michael DiMatteo who she married later in life.
She is survived by her two loving cats, Jaxon and Else, her daughters Amy Avery and Kelly Anctil, a sister, Janis Tonge and brother Thomas Abbott. Four Grandchildren-Brendan, Landan, Adameus and Atticus who she absolutely loved with all of her heart, she was so very proud to be a grandmother.
A celebration of life will be planned for a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution can be made to Hospice of Southern Maine, Gosnell Memorial Hospice House or any reputable wildlife/animal rescue of your choosing.
